Gaultier did not receive any formal training as a designer but sent his drawings to Pierre Cardin who hired him as an assistant in 1970. He presented his own collection in 1976 and, from 1981 on, was known as the ‘enfant terrible’ of French fashion. His big & tall mens clothing collections drew upon street styles and popular culture and, as a result, developed a wide appeal, as he successfully brought high fashion to the masses. Gaultier designed the wardrobe for many motion pictures including Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element, Pedro Almodovar’s Kika, Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s The City of Lost Children.

As the themes of his collection showings were constantly changing boundaries of gender, race and sexuality, they were provocative and contained elements of political shock. He used undergarments in his big mens clothing lines to manipulate the shape of the body and to suggest eroticism. He experimented with the idea that clothing could be a form of body armor and could create new silhouettes. His most publicized work was the corset with the cone-shaped bra that he designed for Madonna for her Blond Ambition tour in 1990, as well as the wardrobe he designed for her Confessions tour in 2006.

Gaultier shocked the fashion world with his use of skirts for men, especially kilts, in an attempt to question gender stereotyping. He consistently presented cross-dressing in his menswear collections. He offered an alternative view of male sexuality as his models strutted the stage with feather boas, corsets, bejeweled bodices, skintight trousers and furs. He was celebrated for his designs in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition entitled ‘Bravehearts – Men in skirts’. His use of unconventional models on the catwalk, either older men, full-figured women or pierced and heavily tattooed individuals, reinforced his reputation for social deviance and defiance.

Gaultier presents haute couture collections as well as pret-a-porter collections each season and has joined Hermes to design their newly relaunched clothing line. He is also well-known for his extensive perfume range and, in 2005, his Gaultier2 (pronounced Gaultier to the power of two) was advertised as a unisex ‘fragrance for humanity’, catering to both sexes.
